SHRA redevelops affordable housing for disabled

Sacramento Business JournalĀ  October 5, 2012 - Stanford Nax

A former San Carlos Motel at 2830 Stockton Blvd., bought by the Housing Authority of the city of Sacramento in 1979 and turned into an independent living facility called Kelsey Village, is being transformed again -- this time into 20 units of affordable housing near UC Davis Medical Center for people with developmental disabilities.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday.

The renovated Kelsey Village will be a two-story, elevator-assisted project featuring a community room, laundry facilities, lounge, activities room and a secured community garden. The property had fallen into disrepair and the estimated cost of rehabilitation was $2.7 million. So, the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency partnered with Satellite Housing of Berkeley and Domus Development of San Francisco to redevelop the site. Domus is the company that built the award-winning La Valentina infill housing project in Sacramento.

Project costs are estimated at $5.6 million, including $2.5 million in redevelopment funding.
