Jack Capon Villa officially opens Friday.

Capon Villa first in city to support developmentally disabled adults

Civic leaders from the city and county will gather on Lincoln Avenue Friday, May 16, to celebrate the opening of the Jack Capon Villa housing community with a ribboncutting ceremony.

The villa, located at 2216 Lincoln Ave., is the first supportive housing community for adults with developmental disabilities in the City of Alameda.

The housing community provides one- and two-bedroom apartments for 19 households in which at least one member has a developmental disability and total household income is at or below 50 percent of the area’s median income. As the first affordable development of its kind in Alameda, Jack Capon Villa directly prevents homelessness for a highly vulnerable population — developmentally disabled adults whose aging parents are no longer able to support them.

Attendees and speakers at the event include: Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan; Mayor Marie L. Gilmore; Alameda County Housing Director Linda Gardner and representatives from state government, developers and fundraisers. Villa resident and disabled artist Cedric Johnson and Barbara Capon, wife of the late Jack Capon for whom the project is named will also attend. Capon was a long-time Alameda resident who founded the local Special Olympics program and served as the volunteer director from 1973 to 1999.

The project leverages public and private funding to subsidize rental prices. Residents will pay just 30 percent of their adjusted monthly income for rent due to Section 8 vouchers provided by the Housing Authority of the City of Alameda. The villa was developed by nonprofits Satellite Affordable

Housing Associates and Housing Consortium of the East Bay and was the last project in the city to receive redevelopment agency funding.

The property is located two blocks from the Park Street shopping district, and features wheelchair accessible units, an elevator, an on-site manager’s unit, a community room and a computer lab all constructed using environmentally friendly building materials.

The ceremony starts at 3 p.m. For more information, visit sahahomes.org.
