Newark Gardens I is a 150-unit affordable senior residential community. The building provides 149 one-bedroom units and 1 two-bedroom unit in a 2- and 3-story elevator-served wood frame building. The property also includes a recreation and dining hall with commercial-sized kitchen, a library, a lobby, two offices, common space restrooms, maintenance room, laundry room, extensive landscaped grounds and two elevators. Originally constructed by SAHA in 1983, Newark Gardens I was rehabilitated in January 2011.  Renovations included replacement of original single paned windows with energy efficient double paned windows in all residential units, complete removal and replacement of the existing siding, and repairs to the roofing. Newark Gardens and SAHA’s adjacent 50-unit Newark Gardens II are the only fully affordable multifamily housing developments in the City of Newark.
